Being a successful negotiator and using principled negotiation involvesa lot of hard work and preparation. However, it can also be rewarding when you walk out after a deal knowing that both sides got what they wanted. During the negotiation process, remember to try to uncover the other side’s motivating interests, never lose sight of your goals and objectives, and try to convince the other party to use an objective standard. And, if the other party uses dirty tactics, let them know that you are aware of what they are doing; attack the problem—not the people; maintain your composure; and continue with the negotiation.
